VirtualForest camera damaged

Storm Babet damages infrastructure

After almost three year in service the VirtualForest (virtualforest.bluegreenlabs.org) camera was damaged beyond repair by falling branches at the Gontrode research forest of Ghent University. Although some of the parts could be salvaged, most importantly the camera, the housing and internal support as well as the Raspberry Pi controller should be replaced. Given time restrictions it is unlikely that the camera will be replaced in the near-future.

Despite this unfortunate destruction of the hardware the project has seen ample attention when running at Harvard Forest and supported at least one Masters’ thesis at Ghent University. As with the data for Harvard Forest, I will gather all images and deposit them on Zenodo for research or other creative purposes under an open license.
